This new incident shows the flawed algorithm of Google News. This week, many people shared an article about NASA confirming that Earth will experience 6 days of total darkness this coming December because of “solar storm” and this massive solar storm will block 90% of light coming from the Sun.
The news was erroneously included in Google News due to the search engine’s brand new algorithm for Google News that automatically indexes source articles, whether the site is included in Google News or not. The fake news article appeared after a legitimate “news source” on Google linked to the webpage. In addition to non-traditional, fake and satire news, Google also started adding YouTube videos on Google News without warning — as long as the video was embedded by a news source.
