Facebook & Nielsen Team Up

Nielsen is looking to collaborate with Facebook in order to track what viewers see on their smartphones and tablets.

The news about the partnership broke out during the fall-season of this year when Facebook managed to alter the posts of their users in order to know and track their moods. It was an utter failure, with a vast majority of Facebook users sending and filing complaints to the Silicon Valley giant, Facebook then turned to Nielsen to help them make the study.

Consumer privacy is a main concern for Nielsen with hopes that this partnership can push the limits of collective data with regards to viewership and social media. “The world is shifting radically, and so we had to evolve our measurement so that we could capture all of this fragmented viewing,” said Cheryl Idell, a Nielsen executive vice president.

The very definition of “watching TV” changing, the Facebook-Nielsen partnership is part of a stepped-up campaign to get a better glimpse of how people are using computers and mobile devices for their entertainment. It also is intended to bring the art of audience measurement into the digital age.
